HUNGRYKIDS.ORG AND OTHER ADVOCACY GROUPS RAISING AWARENESS USING FACEBOOK GROUPS

(Montréal, Québec) December 18, 2006 –Recently formed world poverty and hunger awareness group HungryKids.org has been aiming most of their message at young adults, and they have been doing so almost exclusively through online social networking site facebook.com.

“We noticed right away on facebook that young adults from 16-22 seemed to have a genuine interest in global issues based on the groups they were joining ” said Brad Hines, creator of HungryKids.org. “Many of these groups offer various promises of charitable contributions in exchange for people getting the message out. We jumped on board ourselves creating our group, and then asking rapper Lenny P to write and release a song raising hunger awareness if it reaches 10,000 people, an extremely modest goal.”

Having a respective facebook group often allows an advocacy group to support their cause in a more personal way outside of their own website. On the HungryKids.org facebook wall, one girl vocalizes her opinion “Lenny P should write the song anyway”. These facebook groups, some of enormous sizes seem to be a trend to stay. One of the largest groups in this capacity, created by an NYU student is simply called “For Every 1,000 that join this group I will donate $1 for Darfur.” It has half a million people in it. Many critics hail the joining of these clubs a form of “slacktivism” akin to wearing around an awareness ribbon for an obvious cause, but the bottom line is, the young minds of the globe are generating both real money and solutions within these clubs.

###

HungryKids.org is a nonprofit grassroots advocacy organization, committed to creating awareness of the world's current issue of hunger and poverty. It is an informational charity as we do not collect money but rather we educate on the issue of world hunger.
Our purpose is to eliminate many of the myths surrounding the issue of world hunger, why it does it exist, and most importantly what can be done about it at an individual level to create a maximum impact.
